Assignment 2 - Concept and Design Development

Right after Assignment 1 presentation, my lecturer told us to do ideation by using bubble map to generate ideas. After that, sketch at least 10 design for an idea. This was really tough as I feel that what I drew is already existing now, not for future. Therefore, my lecturer ask me to take a break while searching some really nice furniture because I was really exhausted after forcing myself to do 50 sketches. After that, my lecturer also reduce the sketches to 30 so that we focus more on quality not quantity. She also intimate Carl Liu sketching demo to us. This is for the first time I feel sketch can be so pleasant and nice.

So, from the 50 sketches, 3 design are chosen for further development. More Pinterest search, more sketches until I feel like giving up on this module. Keep doing sketches until the one I feel the best. And finally, I get the design I like. I wouldn't say it is the best but it is the one that my heart say:" This is the one!" I get the inspiration from wave, also infinity symbol. I know that I will have challenges if I'm going to built this furniture out but I'm not afraid of it because challenges make me grow. But at the same time, I'm actually hoping my lecturer doesn't choose my design because it's so difficult to make this s**t out!

For the composition of the board, I use the same colour theme from my previous assignment. I really struggle on the technical drawing even though I made a mock up model as a reference. And I was planning to use wood and glass/plastic to make the furniture. As you can see from the material I planned to use, you can know that how much I want my lecturer not to choose my design because moulding glass or plastic is really expensive for a student which take this module as minor subject.

Assignment 1- The interpretation of 2030

What is future like? Full of disaster or full of technology? Or it can still be the same as now? We are given a year (2030) for us to imagine how 2030 will look like. Of course, everyone has different personal interpretation about 2030. Some will say the world of 2030 is very famous with 3D printing, some will thought that 2030 is an AI world. Well, what's my prediction of 2030 look like?

When I first thought of 2030, it is a world that lack of space, lots of skyscrapers, and overpopulation. From my mind, I can view that 2030 is like China now. Cramps with people and factories. Therefore, I did some research about some scientist's prediction on 2030. I'm surprise with the design of vertical farming and green world. I think that's a brilliant design! So, I included that prediction in my presentation board. I read a lot of articles about 2030 during the research and I felt that human will be way too stress in competing with time and achievements. I feel that I should design a furniture that slow down human pace, let them have a break with nature.
*My design will be show in Assignment 2! Stay Tuned!*

I compose my board into the good and bad side of 2030 with the use of black and white. The facts that I put in is back up with articles that I researched. With the help of images, I bet that you can understand my point of view about 2030 *hopefully* xD

Assignment 1 - Interview

Just to update you guys, I had change to UCSI university due to the heavy traffic of everyday traffic also due to course fees. As my brother need to further study at Kentucky, USA, therefore I feel my course fees is a burden to my mum who provide the only financial support in my family.

Well, let's back to the topic! Professional Communication is one of the subject I didn't get exempted and it's Year 1 Sem 1 subject. For the first assignment, we need to interview a few seniors about their favourite subject in UCSI University. We are needed to work in a group of 3 - 4. So, I'm grouping with my classmates in Year 2 Sem 1 (Sem 3) whereby they are also transferred from other college / uni. They are Alice Chua and Kek How. With the help of my class rep, Max, we get to find two seniors which are from degree of Architecture. Both of the seniors is in Year 3 Sem 1(Sem 5).
*The information about the interview is attached below, feel free to read it*

It's a good opportunity to interview seniors and get to know them. As we are still newbies in this university, seniors is the best mentor we can seek help for. Not only that, by having interview with them, we get to know what are we going to face in future.

Time Traveller Capsule ft. The Blend Space

Finally here comes the final assignment! This assignment took around one and half month to complete. This assignment is about designing two container of living and working space (compact living) for the time traveller. I choose The Two Children of Woolpit as my client. Not only that, this assignment is linked with the past group assignment. We need to choose a context from Perhentian Kecil Island and I choose the jungle area near to the Windmill.
First of all, we need to do research on our time traveller. I found out my time traveller is a pair of brother and sister. Based on the internet information, the elder sister is named Agnes by the villagers whereas her brother doesn't has a name because her brother couldn't adapt to Earth surrounding and passed away. I don't want the story to be bad ending, therefore I "make" her brother, Xavier alive and live with his sister.
My whole story starts like that... Agnes and Xavier came from an island named St. Martin Land. It's an island without sunlight and the people there is all in green-coloured skin. So do Agnes and Xavier, they are green skinned too. Once they travelled to earth, they were found by the villagers of Woolpit in ditches that trap wolves. After that, they were adopted by Sir Richard, one of the villagers. They were dressed in unfamiliar materials clothes and spoke unintelligible language but as time passed, both of them learned to speak English and start to adapt to Earth environment. Soon, Agnes explore city living and fall in love the urban living whereas her brother, Xavier prefer to stick with the nature living. Therefore, Agnes lose her green skinned to normal human pale skinner whereas Xavier stayed in green skinned and is disliked by humans. So, Agnes who care for her brother decided to stay him in the nature.
Therefore, I designed the container with a mixture theme of rustic and nature. Ground floor is more on greenery such as gardening and the ceiling design is tangles of curvy steel rod indicates the "Tarzan" tangle whereas first floor is more to modern style and it's more rigid. I make use the context for example, I use the tangles to make a hammock at the first floor balcony, also, I used them as railing for the balcony too. I placed the container suspended from the ground, hanging at the trees so that it has a nice overview of the jungle.
For the model making, this is my first time using real material to make the site context. Making a mess for this model is tiring but the outcome is fascinating and impress myself a lot.  I would like to thanks to my supportive mother who helped me through this assignment. She help me to chop the branches also mentally support me, also, of course financial support xD

2C & 2D Inventory Report and Sample Board (Final Integration with IAD 2)

After the drawings, we need to choose the materials that used in our container no matter for walls, flooring or furniture. Then from there, we need to get at least 7 of the real samples. Finding samples is really a great challenge and I realises that wide connection of friends is really important. After getting all the samples, we need to arrange it on a white based plywood or MDF board. Then, we need to create the inventory report.

2B - Built in Furniture (Final Integration with IAD 2)

Continuing from the previous drawing, this time we need to draw a detail drawing of own designed built-in furniture. I decided to use my first floor built-in closet which is under a landing for the bed. There's two drawer for clothes hanging, two drawer for folded clothes and a place for mini item display.

2A - Floor, Wall and Ceiling Joineries Detail (Final Integration with IAD 2)

This is an assignment integration with IAD 2. From our section in IAD, we enlarge the scale and do detail drawing of floor to wall joinery, and wall to ceiling joinery. I decided to use the ground floor wood deck to container floor detailing, and ground floor opened ceiling/roof to container wall also to spiral staircase steps detailing. I did some research on container wall. It usually finished with gypsum board and there's spray foam insulation between gypsum board and container deck. It is really interesting doing detail research on all these. For the wood deck, we can choose to cover the joist or not. So I decided to not cover because the structure of joists are beautiful.
